Chapter 16

Summer hadn’t been able to sleep much at all since she was so upset by what had happened with Warren. She wasn’t sure if she was angrier with him for not divulging the fact he was awake at the time or at herself for acting like a strumpet – just like he had said. She couldn’t control herself around him. Something about being with Warren made her throw caution to the wind, wanting to live out all her hidden desires. She’d felt so trapped as the baron’s wife that this had felt freeing and she’d embraced it. In retrospect, perhaps she’d acted a little too freely.

Nairnie had stayed with her throughout the night at her request. Summer wasn’t sure Warren wouldn’t really sleepwalk back to her chamber this time. If he did, she didn’t want to have to face him alone.

She was up early today, just before sunrise. She’d gotten out of bed, dressed and decided to go down to the kitchen to find something to eat. Her little tryst with Sir Warren had made her hungry, wanting more. However, she was not hungry for food.

“Lady Summer, I dinna like the fact ye’ve been lyin’ to Sir Warren about havin’ made love with him,” Nairnie told her. “Ye really need to tell him the truth.”

“I know,” she said, picking up her jeweled diadem and placing it on her head. “I couldn’t sleep all night I was so upset by what happened.”

“Are ye sure ye werena just upset that he didna make love to ye? After what ye told me, he had the perfect opportunity to do just that and yet he turned ye away.”

“Yes, he did.” This was what was really bothering her. “I suppose I was acting like a strumpet last night. I’m not sure why I did it.”

“Dinna forget ye also used him, thinking he was asleep and that he wouldna remember what went on between ye.” Summer had told Nairnie everything last night after Warren bumped into the old woman when he stormed from the room. She needed to confide in someone and Nairnie seemed so wise – even if she was old.

“Yes, I used him because I was feeling incredibly lonely. I know I shouldn’t have done that and I’m not proud of it at all. I’m not sure what came over me. I guess I just needed to feel loved by someone even if it wasn’t real.”

“Now listen here, lassie.” Nairnie put one hand on her hip and pointed at Summer with the other. “Love canna be forced. What ye two have between ye is only lust. Ye need to push aside these feelin’s because if the word gets out how ye’ve been actin’, no man will want to marry ye.”

“I never thought about that.” She purposely didn’t tell Nairnie that what she felt for Warren might be more than just lust. It didn’t matter since Summer decided she would never marry anyone related to the baron. Norbert had often spoken about his nephew and always said he was so much like him.
